#121 – Language

Language enables rational beings to communicate thoughts and feelings absolutely essential to the survival and growth of the individual and their community. To be denied participation in a common language would therefore be equivalent to being born without the ability to speak or hear. Love of wisdom requires one to do everything in one’s power to inspire in students a hunger for knowledge and intellectual creativity; and only through the medium of language can a teacher pass on the courage and love of learning inseparable from human flourishing. Language enables people with diverse life experiences to share their unique customs and beliefs, and so without it a person can never hope to transcend the limitations imposed on them by Nature. Finally, language is the form in which one’s most intimate thoughts and feelings are expressed; it is therefore the guarantor of meaning and style, two essential elements that would invariably be lost in translation.
